Hypotheses and plans: cheat sheet
The summary, key terms and the trap to avoid for every lesson, in order. Print it, or read it, cover it, and say it back.
- The conditionnel présent = future stem + imparfait endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient).
- Irregular stems match the futur simple: ser-, aur-, ir-, fer-, pourr-, devr-, voudr-.
- No de after devrais / pourrais; de after ce serait mieux.
- With vous: vous devriez, à votre place.
- le conditionnel présent
- the "would" form: future stem + imparfait endings
- tu devrais
- you should
- tu pourrais
- you could
- à ta place, je…
- if I were you, I would…
- ce serait mieux de…
- it would be better to…
- il vaudrait mieux…
- it would be better to… (valoir)
- je te conseille de…
- I advise you to…
- épuisé(e)
- exhausted
Watch out: Adding de after devrais or pourrais: wrong: tu devrais de dormir. After devoir and pouvoir the infinitive follows directly: tu devrais dormir. Ce serait mieux and je te conseille take de: ce serait mieux de dormir, je te conseille de dormir. Il vaudrait mieux takes the infinitive directly, like devrais: il vaudrait mieux dormir.
- Real, possible: si + présent, futur (or imperative).
- Imagined: si + imparfait, conditionnel.
- Never a conditional or a futur right after si in an if-clause.
- Si j'étais toi, je… advises; s'il(s) before il(s); et si on… ? suggests.
- si + imparfait, conditionnel
- imagined, unlikely or unreal situation
- si + présent, futur (or imperative)
- real, possible situation
- si j'étais toi, je…

- s'il / s'ils
- si before il / ils
- et si on… ?
- what if we…? / how about…?
- gagner au loto
- to win the lottery
- un million d'euros
- a million euros
Watch out: Putting the conditional after si: wrong: Si j'aurais de l'argent, j'achèterais une voiture. The same goes for the futur: wrong: S'il pleuvra is wrong; say s'il pleut, ….
- Uses: two actions at once, how or by what means, condition.
- The gérondif has the same subject as the main verb. It never agrees.
- Tout en + gérondif stresses simultaneity or contrast.
- le gérondif
- en + present participle (en marchant)
- le participe présent
- verb form in -ant (marchant)
- en + -ant
- while doing / by doing

- tout en + -ant
- while (at the same time, often with contrast)
- je t'appelle en rentrant
- I'll call you when I get home
- à la fois
- at once, at the same time
Watch out: Using a gérondif when the two verbs have different subjects: wrong: En marchant dans la rue, la pluie a commencé. The rain was not walking!
- Wishes: j'aimerais, je souhaiterais; j'ai envie de is a little more casual.

Watch out: Putting de after compter: wrong: Je compte de rester. Compter takes the infinitive directly: Je compte rester. Also, avoir l'intention, envisager and mon objectif est always take de.
