Telling stories: cheat sheet
The summary, key terms and the trap to avoid for every lesson, in order. Print it, or read it, cover it, and say it back.
- Passé composé = avoir (present) + past participle.
- -er → -é, most -ir → -i, many -re → -u.
- Everyday irregulars: fait, pris, vu, eu, été, bu, lu, écrit, dit, mis.
- Negative: ne + avoir + pas + participle; in speech the ne often drops.
- In conversation, on a … is more common than nous avons ….
- passé composé
- the everyday past (avoir or être + participle)
- participe passé
- past participle: regardé, fini, attendu, fait
- Tu as passé un bon week-end ?
- Did you have a good weekend?
- qu'est-ce que tu as fait ?
- what did you do?
- sympa
- nice, cool (informal)
Watch out: Putting pas after the participle: wrong: je n'ai fini pas. Ne … pas wraps the small verb avoir: je n'ai pas fini.
- Movement and change-of-state verbs take être: aller, venir, partir, arriver, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, naître, mourir, rester, tomber…
- The participle agrees with the subject: elle est allée, ils sont partis.
- A mixed group is masculine plural.
- Everything else takes avoir.
- être verbs
- about twenty verbs of movement or change of state (aller, venir, partir…)
- accord
- agreement: the participle takes -e and -s like an adjective
- rentrer
- to come or go home
- naître / mourir
- to be born / to die (né, mort)
Watch out: Using avoir with these verbs: wrong: j'ai allé, wrong: il a parti. Say je suis allé(e), il est parti.
- Imparfait: nous form minus -ons + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
- Être is the exception: j'étais.
- Imparfait for the scene, feelings and habits; passé composé for events.
- Clue words: tous les jours, d'habitude → imparfait; un jour, soudain → passé composé.
- imparfait
- past tense for descriptions, states and habits
- passé composé
- past tense for single completed events
- d'habitude
- usually
- quand j'étais petit(e)
- when I was little
Watch out: Using the passé composé for descriptions: wrong: Il a fait beau et j'ai été content sounds like two separate events. To describe how things were, use the imparfait: Il faisait beau et j'étais content.
- depuis + present: still going on (j'habite ici depuis deux ans).
- il y a + past: ago (je suis arrivé(e) il y a deux ans).
- pendant + past: a finished period (j'ai cherché pendant un mois).
- ça fait … que = depuis, in speech.
- Order: d'abord, ensuite / puis, après, enfin.
- depuis
- for / since (still going on: + present)
- il y a
- ago
- pendant
- for, during (a finished period)
- depuis combien de temps ?
- how long (have you … )?
- d'abord, ensuite, puis, après, enfin
- first, next, then, afterwards, finally
- ça fait … que
- for … (spoken, = depuis): ça fait trois mois que j'habite ici
- le déménagement
- the move (house)
Watch out: Using the passé composé with depuis for something still true: wrong: J'ai habité à Lyon depuis cinq ans (and I still live there). French uses the present: J'habite à Lyon depuis cinq ans.
