The brief

Your task
You have 60 minutes: about 10 to read the documents, 30 for the email, 10 to record, and the rest to score your work.
Part A. Write the email (in the box below). Write to the Atelier Cormier service clients, today, as Alix. Write 160 to 180 words in French. Counting rule: count every word from « Madame, Monsieur, » to the end of the closing formula, both included; the Objet line and your name are not counted; words are the groups of letters separated by spaces, and l'étagère counts as one word. Your email must:
- say what you ordered, when, and with which order number, and what went wrong;
- tell the story in the right order, honestly, including what happened at delivery;
- ask clearly for what you want, with a date, and say what you will accept if that is not possible;
- stay polite but firm, in a formal email (vous, a subject line, an opening and a closing).
Part B. Record yourself (telephone, about 2 minutes). You decide to leave Madame Fabre a voice message as well, to explain your case in your own words. Record it in French; do not read your email aloud. Say what you ordered, what happened on the day of delivery, when and how you found the problems, what you wrote, what she answered, and why her offer does not work for you, then say what you want. Speak for between 1 min 30 s and 2 min 30 s. You may record twice; keep the better take. If you do not know a word (fendue, sachet), describe it in French instead of stopping or using English. Play the recording back before you score it.

Quick quiz

Why must Alix write to the shop today, and not next week?
- nothing in the documents says so
- no document mentions a collection date
- the delivery was on Thursday 15 October
Show answer
The shop asks for problems to be reported within 7 days of delivery, so the limit is Thursday 22 October.. The shop's own 7-day rule ends on Thursday 22 October. Alix's first message (17 October) was in time but had no order number, date or photos, so she should complete the report before then.
The delivery slip says « Réserves du destinataire : néant ». What is the best way to deal with it in your email?
- that would be untrue: the slip says néant
- the shop can see the slip, so the email must explain it before it raises doubt
- you have no proof of that, and it is not what you are asking for
Show answer
Say honestly that you signed without reserve because the cartons looked intact, and that you found the faults when you opened them on 17 October.. you told the story honestly and the dates and photos back it up. An invented detail would weaken the whole complaint.
What should the refund request cover?
- the équerres arrived in good condition
- delivery was made, even a day late
- the price of one shelf is not given anywhere
Show answer
The bibliothèque only, 189 euros.. you only ask back for what was faulty: the bibliothèque, 189 euros. The équerres and the delivery were fine.
Madame Fabre offers a replacement shelf in « trois semaines ». Why is that a problem for Alix?
- the 7 days apply to Alix's report, not to the shop
- Madame Fabre says it does
- she says screws cannot be sent separately, which is another problem, but not this one
Show answer
Three weeks from 19 October is about 9 November, after the family visit on 7 November.. 19 October plus 21 days is 9 November, so the offer misses the 7 November visit. The shop sends no screws on their own, so Alix asks for them with the shelf.

One line is wrong. Tap it.
Which line of this draft email has a mistake?
Show answer
La bibliothèque a arrivé le jeudi 15 octobre.. arriver takes être in the passé composé: la bibliothèque est arrivée le jeudi 15 octobre.
Which line of this draft email is not right for a formal complaint?
Show answer
Salut and je veux are too casual, and a demand without any politeness is not firm, only rude. Use Madame, Monsieur and je souhaiterais or je voudrais.
Quick quiz
Tap an answer to check it.
Which sentence is polite and firm at the same time?
- it describes a feeling but asks for nothing
- too hesitant: the reader will not know what you want
- firm, but it blames the reader and is not polite
Show answer
À défaut, je souhaiterais être remboursée de la bibliothèque et que vous veniez la reprendre.. the conditional (je souhaiterais) is polite and the request itself is precise.

Objet : commande n° AC-70418, étagère fendue et vis manquantes
Madame, Monsieur,

Part B. Model script for the voice message (229 words, roughly 1 min 45 s at a natural pace)
Why it works
- The facts are exact and in order. Order number, order date, delivery date and the two faults are all there, and the email follows the real sequence: ordering, delivery, discovery, shop's answer, request. This is the habit tell it in order: the reader never has to guess what came first.
- It is honest about the signature. The email says plainly that Alix signed without reserve and explains why. This is stronger than hiding it, because the shop already has the slip.
- The request is one request, with a date and a fallback. Au plus tard le vendredi 6 novembre gives the shop something to act on, and à défaut says what Alix will accept next. The refund covers the bibliothèque only, not the équerres or the delivery.
- It is polite and firm. Je vous serais reconnaissante de bien vouloir… and Pourriez-vous… keep the tone formal, but the dates are not negotiable.
- The voice message does not read the email. It tells the same story in a more spoken order (« C'est là que j'ai découvert… », « Or mes parents arrivent… »), with the past tenses doing the work: j'ai commandé, il manquait, était fendue.
What a reviewer would flag in a weaker answer
- An email that complains ("la bibliothèque est nulle") without an order number, a date or a clear request.
- Claiming that the damage was written on the delivery slip, or leaving out the signature: both can be checked and lose the reader's trust.
- A refund asked for the whole order (220,90 euros), when only the bibliothèque was faulty.
- A threat in place of a request (je vais tout dire sur internet), or tu, salut and je veux.
- Past tenses mixed up (il a manqué le sachet, la bibliothèque a arrivé), or agreement forgotten (arrivée, fendue, remboursée).
- A spoken account that jumps from the discovery to the request and forgets the shop's answer, or that stops dead when a word is missing instead of describing it.
A second opinion

You are a strict examiner for a French assessment at level B1 (around the DELF B1 exam). I am a learner. Mark my work against the rubric below, using only my words. Do not be generous: if my work does not clearly match the higher description, give the lower score. THE TASK. I was Alix Girard, writing to a furniture shop. The documents: order n° AC-70418 placed on Monday 5 October 2026, delivery estimated Wednesday 14 October; delivered on Thursday 15 October at 17 h 40 and signed with "Réserves : néant"; I discovered on Saturday 17 October a cracked shelf n° 3 and a missing bag of screws V-12 in parcel 2, and I wrote that evening; Madame Fabre replied on Monday 19 October offering a replacement shelf in three weeks, no separate screws, and a 7-day reporting rule. My parents arrive on Saturday 7 November. Part A was an email of 160 to 180 words with a clear request, counted from « Madame, Monsieur, » to the end of the closing formula, both included (the Objet line and my name not counted). Part B was a 2-minute voice message to Madame Fabre telling what happened. THE RUBRIC (score each 0, 1 or 2): 1. Facts in the email. 0 = two facts or fewer correct, a wrong date, number or amount, or something invented. 1 = three or four correct from: order number AC-70418 and 5 October; delivery on 15 October; cracked shelf n° 3 and missing screws; the request with 6 November; the fallback of a 189 euro refund. 2 = all five correct, nothing invented. 2. Clear request and firmness. 0 = no request, only a complaint. 1 = a request without a date or without a fallback, or a rude line. 2 = one clear request with the date 6 November, a fallback (refund and collection), polite but firm wording. 3. Accuracy and length in the email. 0 = outside 150 to 190 words, or eight or more errors, or a blocking error. 1 = 150 to 159 or 181 to 190 words, or 160 to 180 words with four to seven errors, none blocking. 2 = 160 to 180 words with at most three errors, none blocking, past tenses and agreement correct. 4. Formal register. 0 = tu, casual opening, no closing, or mixed registers. 1 = mostly formal with one slip. 2 = Objet line, Madame Monsieur, vous throughout, a proper closing, no informal word. 5. Spoken account in order. 0 = four or fewer of the six events, or out of order. 1 = five or six events with one out of order or one wrong date or time. 2 = all six events in order with connectors and mostly correct past tenses (passé composé and imparfait). 6. Spoken fluency and keeping going. 0 = under 1 min 30 s or over 2 min 30 s, or four or more stops over 3 seconds, or two or more switches to English. 1 = within the time, but one to three stops over 3 seconds, or one switch to English. 2 = within the time, no stop over 3 seconds, and missing words described in French. HOW TO MARK. For each criterion, give the score, then quote the exact words from my answer that justify it. Count the words of my email and say if it is in range. List my errors by type. For the spoken part, I will paste a transcript of my recording and its length in seconds; judge the order of events and the tenses from the transcript, and say you cannot judge pauses from a transcript, so I should score those myself. Add up the total out of 12 and say if I pass (9 or more, and no criterion at 0). Then give at most three priority corrections, each with one example from my own words. Do not rewrite my whole answer. Accept masculine or feminine agreement, if it is consistent. Reply in English, and give French examples in French.
