End-of-level assessment · A1 · First weeks in France
Join the library, meet a friend and introduce yourself
About 30 minutes. Work it as you would at work: on your own, with the material below, then judge your work against the criteria and compare it with a model answer. Pass mark: 75% with no criterion at 0.
The brief
You are Maya Okafor. You moved to the town of Valmont last week. You want a library card for the médiathèque, and a new friend, Inès, has suggested meeting there on Saturday afternoon. You have three things to do: fill in the registration form, answer Inès, and record a short introduction for the library's welcome team, who ask every new member to say hello in French. Work only from the documents below; you may not use a dictionary or a translator.
Today is Tuesday 10 November 2026.

« Bonjour, vous êtes à la médiathèque de Valmont. Nous sommes ouverts du mardi au samedi. Attention : samedi 14 novembre, la médiathèque ferme à 16 heures, et pas à 17 heures, à cause de la fête du quartier. Pour vous inscrire, venez avec une pièce d'identité et un papier avec votre adresse. L'inscription coûte 12 euros pour un an. Merci et à bientôt ! »
Document 4. Inès's message (on your phone)
Salut Maya ! Samedi après-midi, je suis libre. On se retrouve à la médiathèque ? Tu arrives à quelle heure ? À samedi, Inès
(Documents fictifs.)
Your task
Part 1. The form (write it in the box). Fill in the form for Maya. Write each line as « Ligne : réponse », in order, 12 lines in all. Use only your details above.
Part 2. The message to Inès (write it in the box, under the form). Answer Inès in a message of 30 to 50 words. Count every word from the greeting to your name; j'arrive counts as one word, 14 h 30 counts as three, and s'il te plaît counts as three. You decide to arrive at 14 h 30 on Saturday 14 November. Say so, and ask her to wait for you at the entrance (devant l'entrée). Use tu, as Inès is a friend, and start and finish like a message to a friend.
Part 3. The introduction (record yourself on your phone). Record yourself for 20 to 45 seconds as Maya. Say your name, your age, your nationality, where you live, your job and one thing you like, in full sentences. Speak it from memory: don't read it. Play it back and judge it. If your voice recorder offers a transcript, keep it for the rubric.

Document 2. On Friday you finish work at 6.30 pm. Can you register at the library that evening?
- Check the table: the last opening on Friday is 14 h – 18 h
- Friday morning is closed, but Friday afternoon is open from 2 pm
- The Friday morning box says fermé
Show answer
No: on Friday it closes at 6 pm.. Friday opens 14 h – 18 h only, so 18 h 30 is too late.
Document 3. Inès and you arrive at the library at 14 h 30 on Saturday 14 November. How long can you stay?
- That would be until 17 h, the usual Saturday closing time: the message says this Saturday is different
- Count from 14 h 30 to 16 h, not to 15 h
- This would be until 17 h 30, which is no closing time at all
Show answer
1 hour 30 minutes. The message says samedi 14 novembre ferme à 16 heures, et pas à 17 heures. From 14 h 30 to 16 h is one hour and thirty minutes.
Document 3. Which two things must you bring to register?
- No photo is asked
- No phone number is asked, and the identity document is missing
- You are getting your card now: you don't have one yet
Show answer
An identity document and a paper with your address. venez avec une pièce d'identité et un papier avec votre adresse.

Which line of Maya's form is wrong?
- Right: a surname is in capital letters
- Right: day, month, year, so 3 July 1996
- Wrong: Maya is British, so britannique. Anglaise would mean English
- Right: a woman's job takes -e
Show answer
Nationalité : anglaise. Britannique is the nationality; anglaise is not the same thing.

Maya introduces herself. Which sentence has a mistake?
- Right: the verb is s'appeler
- Right: habiter à + a town
- Wrong: in French you have an age: J'ai trente ans
- Right: no article before a job after je suis
Show answer
Je suis trente ans.. Age uses avoir, not être.

Inès is a friend your age. Which message to her sounds right?
- Too formal for a friend, and Madame is wrong here
- Vous is for one person you don't know well; she is a friend
- This says Inès arrives, but you are the one who arrives
Show answer
Salut Inès ! J'arrive à 14 h 30. Tu m'attends devant l'entrée ? À samedi !. A friend gets salut and tu; and the sentence is about you (j'arrive).
Score your work
For each criterion, pick the description that matches what you wrote, not what you meant. Be strict: the model answer comes next.
Model answer
Part 1. The form
- Civilité : Mme
- Nom : OKAFOR
- Prénom : Maya
- Date de naissance : 03/07/1996
- Nationalité : britannique
- Adresse : 8 rue des Tilleuls
- Code postal et ville : 71100 Valmont
- Téléphone : 06 55 01 23 47
- Courriel : maya.okafor@exemple.fr
- Profession : infirmière
- Lettre d'information par courriel : non
- Date d'inscription : 10/11/2026
Part 2. The message to Inès (34 words)
Salut Inès ! Merci pour ton message. Samedi, j'arrive à la médiathèque à 14 h 30. Tu m'attends devant l'entrée, s'il te plaît ? Je suis contente de te voir. À samedi ! Maya
Part 3. The introduction (20 to 45 seconds; model script)
Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Maya Okafor. J'ai trente ans. Je suis britannique et j'habite à Valmont. Je suis infirmière. J'aime la cuisine et j'aime marcher. Je suis contente d'être ici.
Why it works. Every line of the form matches a field and a fact: the date goes day, month, year (3 July is 03/07, not 07/03); the nationality and the job agree with a woman. The message answers Inès's question with the time and makes one clear request; tu, salut and à samedi are the friend's register, and the message is about you (j'arrive). The extra sentence about the closing time is not needed, so the model leaves it out; the time is what Inès asked. The introduction is built from one pattern repeated: je + verb (je m'appelle, j'ai, je suis, j'habite, j'aime), with avoir for age.
What a reviewer would flag in a weaker answer:
- Date de naissance : 07/03/1996 (month first), or Nationalité : anglaise, or Profession : infirmier for Maya.
- A message in vous, or with no greeting or closing, or one that gives the time but forgets the request (or the reverse).
- j'arrive à 14 h 30 samedi à 16 h: the wrong time slips in from Document 3.
- Je suis trente ans or Je m'appelle est Maya: the same two mistakes keep coming back, which means the pattern isn't yet automatic.
- An introduction that is read from the page in a flat voice, or a list of words (Maya. Britannique. Infirmière.), not sentences.
A second opinion

You are a strict French examiner at A1 level (around DELF A1). I have just done an end-of-level test. Mark my answer against the rubric below, one criterion at a time, giving each a score of 0, 1 or 2 and a one-sentence reason. Quote my own words for every point you make. Do not rewrite my whole answer. At the end, give at most three priority corrections, with the most important first, and say which pattern I should practise. THE TASK. I was Maya Okafor, a British nurse born on 3 July 1996, living at 8 rue des Tilleuls, 71100 Valmont, phone 06 55 01 23 47, email maya.okafor@exemple.fr, who does not want the newsletter and likes cooking and walking. Today is Tuesday 10 November 2026. Part 1: I filled in a 12-line library registration form (Civilité, Nom, Prénom, Date de naissance, Nationalité, Adresse, Code postal et ville, Téléphone, Courriel, Profession, Lettre d'information, Date d'inscription). Part 2: I wrote a 30-to-50-word message to my friend Inès (tu): I arrive at the library on Saturday 14 November at 14 h 30 and I ask her to wait for me at the entrance. Part 3: I recorded a self-introduction of 20 to 45 seconds. Below I give you the transcript of what I said; you can't hear me, so judge only the content and the grammar, and tell me which sentences I should say again aloud. THE RUBRIC (0, 1 or 2 each): 1. The form: 2 = all 12 lines right (Nom in capitals OKAFOR, 03/07/1996, britannique, 71100 Valmont, infirmière, non, 10/11/2026); 1 = 1 or 2 lines wrong or missing; 0 = 3 or more wrong, or the birth date written month first. 2. The message, what it says: 2 = all three facts right (Saturday, 14 h 30, wait at the entrance); 1 = two of three, or one wrong; 0 = one or none. 3. The message, shape and length: 2 = 30 to 50 words, a greeting, a closing, and tu throughout; 1 = one slightly off (28 to 29 or 51 to 55 words, or one of greeting and closing is missing); 0 = under 28 or over 55 words, no greeting and no closing, or vous with a friend. 4. The message, accuracy: 2 = at most 2 mistakes (each wrong verb form, wrong word or missing accent counts once); 1 = 3 to 5 mistakes; 0 = 6 or more. 5. The introduction, content: 2 = at least 5 of the 6 facts (name, age, nationality, town, job, one like), all true to Maya's card; 1 = 3 or 4; 0 = 2 or fewer. 6. The introduction, how it sounds: judge from the transcript whether I used full sentences with je + a verb. 2 = full sentences, 20 to 45 seconds, no mistake that would stop a listener; 1 = full sentences but one or two problems; 0 = single words or no verbs, or I read it from a page. If unsure between two scores, give the lower one. Count the words of my message yourself and tell me the number. Then give the total out of 12 (the pass mark is 9, with no criterion at 0).
